IC 2497 is a massive (M ∼ 10 10 M ⊙), nearby (z = 0.05) spiral galaxy associated with Hanny's Voorwerp (HV), an extended emission line region (11 × 16 kpc in projected extent) located at ∼20 kpc in projection from the core of the galaxy and closely matching its redshift.

IC 2497 is a spiral galaxy close to the intergalactic cloud Hanny's Voorwerp. IC 2497 is a former quasar, whose light lit up Hanny's Voorwerp, which is now a light echo of that extinct quasar. It is about 45,000–70,000 light-years (14,000–21,000 pc) away from Hanny's Voorwerp. The quasar shut down sometime in the last 70,000 years.

We present Hubble Space Telescope imaging and spectroscopy, along with supporting Galaxy Evolution Explorer and ground-based data, for the extended high-ionization cloud known as Hanny's Voorwerp, near the spiral galaxy IC 2497. Wide Field Camera 3 images show complex dust absorption near the nucleus of IC 2497.
