Sharpless 171 incorporates NGC 7822 and the active region Cederblad 214, much of which is imaged above. The area above spans about 20 light years, lies about 3,000 light years away, and can be seen with a telescope toward the northern constellation of the King of Ethiopia (Cepheus).

Cederblad 214 is part of NGC 7822, a large emission nebula located in northern Cepheus, which is actually the northernmost emission nebula in the sky. To be precise, the brightest patch of nebulosity at left below the images's center is named Cederblad 214.

Cederblad 214 is a bright nebula and star-forming region in the wider SH2-171 area in Cepheus. It contains the star cluster Berkeley 59 (bottom-left of centre in this image). The complex is believed to be some 800–1000 parsecs distant, with the younger components aged no more than a few million years.
